Abstract
This analysis seeks to clarify whether the use of the golden ratio as a structural and agogic element is deliberately throughout the movements of this symphony. Brahms, aware of the weight of continuing the symphonic tradition after Beethoven, who established the nineteenth-century musical canon, achieves a symphony that is cohesive and balanced in its parts through a series of structural resources, both musical and extramusical. Using a data matrix, a high level of certainty about its intentional use will be obtained, thus achieving a more comprehensive interpretation of his work.
